“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Maya Angelou
Our life on earth is a gift. This gift is “opened” with a breath, and “concludes” with a breath. In between those breaths, whether we have a short life or a long one, the journey is uniquely ours. There will be times when we are convinced we are “in control”, as well as times when life feels completely “out of our realm of control”. We may not always be able to control what happens to us, our family, our friends, or our world, but we can choose how we respond.
Life is about choice, that is true. And we know as human beings we have the gift of “free will”. We hear this often, and assume it is that simple, so matter of fact. The truth is, it is it can be complicated. You may have the best plan to make good decisions as you exercise your free will, but as we all know, the journey of life will take us down dead ends, we will hit road blocks, we will be thrown off course over and over.
If you stay on “autopilot”, you actually minimize your opportunity to "choose", or even eliminate it completely. If you have set a hard course on your “life GPS” and you follow it no matter what else is going on in your life or others around you, you can actually sabotage your goals and objectives. You have probably seen the commercial where people are driving along a dark road, following the GPS in their car and it directs them right into a corn field or off the end of a pier into a lake. If we are not aware of our surroundings, the people and places in our path, the events in our close and our distant world, then we lose opportunity along the way to "recalculate".
Sometimes we miss opportunities that may alter our ability to choice wisely and we end up "crashing" … maybe not into a corn field or a lake … but the crashes will come even if we are following a path. But are we on the right path to living our best life?
We don't know how many breaths we will get between our first and last, but what we do know is that we can learn, grow, shift, change, and thrive by taking time to really breathe. Simply pause, consider, and push away distraction – take time to “check in” with your mind, your body and yes, your spirit.
If we take time to “catch our breath”, to recalculate our path, we will be less likely to veer off of our intended path, and be given time to make corrections in our course that will keep us in a place of intention with where we are "in the moment". Reconnect with what is most important - imagine your journey -- be present, dream big, and do what feeds your soul.
